Carnaval. On this page, accompanied by a CD of 2006 Carnaval, are photos from one evening of the competition at the main stage, Teatro de Verano, pictures from an evening at the neighborhood venue Club Malvin, and pics from the inaugural parade, Desfile de Llamadas.

Carnaval introduced us to the musical genre, Murga. Although the word, "Murga" has its origin in the carnaval of Cádiz, Spain, generally, it is thought to have "arrived" in 1906, when an operatic group arrived in Uruguay and, lacking a following, took to the streets of Montevideo to play Murga and "pasar la manga," a local expression meaning "beg for money." In Uruguay, Murga added elements of Candombe and enriched itself with endless Afro-American rhythms adapted to the bass drum, redoblante, and cymbals used to accompany the largely a capella Murga groups. The audio on this page showcases the incredible harmonies of Murga. We hope you enjoy it as well as the pictures!

Candombe: the rhythm of Carnaval...
Desfile de Llamadas (Opening Parade).
Murga: The heart and soul of Carnaval.... We didn't need to understand the lyrics or know the politicians being satirized to fall in love with the music and to stand in awe of the amount of talent in this tiny country.
